DVCAI Artist in Residence

A nonprofit, interdisciplinary artists’ community and arts education facility dedicated to promoting artistic excellence by providing talented artists an opportunity to work and collaborate with some of the world’s most distinguished contemporary artists in the fields of visual, literary, and performing arts. Artists have studio space to think, create and meander through the neighborhoods of Miami. Artists are paired with a local Miami artists and they are required to have open studios and one community engagement. This residency provides young and emerging artists of color opportunities for creative and professional development through mentorship, exhibitions, workshops, and arts administration. 

2018-19: Devora Perez

Devora Perez was born and raised in Miami. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from New World School of the Arts.  Perez is interested in the domestic setting and its influence on gender, race, and class in society. In her work she challenges domesticity through the use of everyday materials such as caulk, cement, plastic, and wood, and uses them in unconventional ways. Through formal and minimal design, Perez emphasizes color, texture, and even the industrial material itself. While some pieces may seem fragile and light others are heavy and dense both visually and physically. These discrepancies in weight between the works and the use of shadows are meant to construct divisions and separate spaces.

JULY 2017: Gerard Caliste

Gerard Caliste was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1994, he became involved with Young Aspirations/Young Artists (YA/YA), through which Caliste produced art for a long list of private collectors, and for companies, organizations and celebrities, including MTV, Swatch Watch, The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and Oprah Winfrey.  In 1994, Caliste was one of 700 artists commissioned by the United Nations to design seat covers for the General Assembly Room in honor of the United Nations’ 50th anniversary in 1995. Caliste attended the Savannah College of Art and Design on a portfolio scholarship and Presidential scholarship. His series, Waterlines- more than two dozen paintings, poems and sculptures - was previewed at Le Mieux Gallery in New Orleans, Louisiana. His Magicity series exhibited at the Lois Lambert Gallery in Santa Monica, California in April 2009. Most recently, in 2016 Caliste was hosted at The Deering Estates in Miami, FL as artist in residence.

AUGUST 2017: NADINE HALL

Nadine Natalie Hall is originally from Bull Bay, a small coastal community in East Rural, St Andrew Jamaica. She has completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree, majoring in Textiles and Fibre Arts at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. Her earliest influences into the world of textiles were spawned from her childhood, where she would watch her mother – a dress maker – transform yards of ordinary fabrics into beautiful garments. Her interest in textile design was further influenced by her experiences in the art department at Excelsior High School in Jamaica, where she was exposed to silkscreen printing and leather craft. She received distinction in CXC art and was awarded Most Outstanding Art Student at her high school graduation.

A passionate fibre artist and avid designer of patterns and prints, she hopes her works will inspire people, locally and internationally, and cause them to ponder on the roles and significance of the intangible, and how their values evolve when presented as tangible within the context of forms, figures, fibres and fabrics. The underlying aesthetic responses in her artworks are imbued and nuanced with issues relating to memory, identity, traditions, continuation and legacies - which she believes are factors which invariably influence the human spirit and experience.

JULY 2018: MICHAEL ELLIOTT

Born in Manchester Jamaica, Michael Elliott is a critically acclaimed artist who paints in a photorealistic style. He attended the Edna Manley College of the Visual Arts in Jamaica. Light and texture play an important role in his paintings, capturing different concepts and themes using a metaphoric approach to politics, the economy, environment and even warfare.

Michael has shown extensively in Jamaica, Miami, and Europe. An exhibition in the National Gallery of Jamaica won him two trophies and a silver medal in the painting category. He was also selected for the 5th edition of ‘Young Talent’. Currently, the artist lives and works in St. Andrew , Jamaica where he operates a dedicated art studio.
