Artists Statement
Kimberly Hess is a Mixed Media / Encaustic artist. She has been surrounded and immersed in art her entire life; as a student, teacher, and as a professional. Her time living and working in major cities across the country - from Pittsburgh to Chicago, Minneapolis, Atlanta, and now Miami - has contributed to a spontaneity in her artistic approach while also influencing the natural elements in her work.
Encaustic painting is a technique where heated, pigmented beeswax is applied to a canvas, oftentimes with other mixed media. The term itself is derived from the Greek word enkaustikos, which means βto burn in.β It is one of the first recorded art forms, yet is still used to this day to achieve the most modern of aesthetics.
This blend of old and new is what drew me to explore the medium. The abstract elements and intuitive flow of textures evokes a sense of calm and nature in each piece.
