“Outside the Lines” was organized to champion the individuality of artists from both within and beyond the Bird Road Arts District. The unifier among the group, a studio practice in South Florida, results in a rich reflection of the region embedded in memories and experiences that result from the convergence of cultures and the transformations resulting from those interactions. 

Through an organic process of gradually expanding the boundaries of invited participants, the curators of “Outside the Lines” developed a show informed by the human geography of South Florida. The eclectic reality of the region is that the population consists of different degrees of generational connections to places as varied as Colombia, Cuba, Jamaica, Venezuela, Israel, and of course, the United States. While for some artists, heritage is a central theme in their work, for others, the production leads to a less direct connection. For all artists in “Outside the Lines,” South Florida is the common thread.
